Nebraska lands Anthony Echemendia, but its portal haul has a catch
The arrivals give Nebraska more firepower, but the toughest lineup decision comes at a weight where a national runner-up already stands.
Nebraska has enough incoming talent to make the lineup harder to crack, not just harder to beat. That is the catch in this portal haul: some of the help arrives exactly where the Huskers already have strength.
- Anthony Echemendia, Nebraska #4 at 149
- Vincent Robinson, Nebraska #5 at 125
- Meyer Shapiro, Nebraska #6 at 157
- Lucas Cochran, Nebraska #8 at 184
Echemendia brings the clearest payoff
Anthony Echemendia Nebraska #4 at 149
Anthony Echemendia arrives from Iowa State ranked 4 at 149 after a 22-5 season. The senior is a two-time All-American with major-decision wins over Nasir Bailey and CJ Composto. We like him as the clearest immediate boost in this class.
The crowded spots carry the argument
Meyer Shapiro Nebraska #6 at 157
Meyer Shapiro brings three All-American finishes from Cornell and a ranking of 6 at 157. His 18-3 season makes him a serious threat to win a spot. It does not make that spot his.
Antrell Taylor is already there, ranked 4 after going 26-4 and finishing as national runner-up. We would bet on the returning senior to hold the job. Nebraska added strength at 157, but calling it an automatic lineup upgrade skips the hardest part.
Vincent Robinson presents a stronger case for changing the starter at 125. The NC State arrival is ranked 5, went 15-5 and followed a national title in 2025 with a fourth-place finish in 2026. We like his chances to take the spot.
Kael Lauridsen still gives that prediction resistance. The returning sophomore is ranked 17 after a 17-13 season that included wins over Dean Peterson and Mack Mauger. This is another competition with a ranked incumbent, not an empty slot waiting to be filled.
Cochran adds another route upward
Lucas Cochran Nebraska #8 at 184
Lucas Cochran comes from Penn State ranked 8 at 184 after going 6-0. His wins over Brady Colbert and Alex Semenenko give Nebraska another ranked arrival beyond the crowded lighter weights. We see a useful boost here, though that short season leaves more to prove.
Our view: these arrivals make Nebraska's projected rank of 3 believable. They raise the ceiling, but four ranked transfers do not equal four improved starting spots. We would back this team to justify that projection before betting on it to climb higher.
